A design has been revealed for a memorial sculpture on a Bury St Edmunds roundabout in honour of airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Bury in Bloom and Bury St Edmunds Town Council chose the design which depicts the tail section of a B17 Flying Fortress bomber and a ‘Dove of Peace’.

The sculpture will be created for the Mount Road/ Lady Miriam Way roundabout, near the Flying Fortress pub, and was designed by blacksmith Nigel Kaines, of Designs on Metal, in Stowlangtoft.

The Square A on the tail fin of the plane denotes the 94th Bomb Group who were stationed at Rougham Airfield.

It is planned to be in place by May 8 2015, the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Organisers are now looking for further sponsorship from businesses, councillors and the public. Contact Melanie Lesser on 01284 766955 or email melanie@buryinbloom.org.uk
