Police are investigating a suspected arson at an historic former silk mill in Glemsford.

Firefighters were called at 11.19am today to the derelict Glemsford Silk Mill, in Chequers Lane, where the silk for the Queen’s coronation robe was made.

Eight appliances including four fire engines dealt with the blaze which was on the first and second floors.

They brought the incident under control by 2.49pm using jets and breathing apparatus.

The fire service believe the blaze was started deliberately and police are investigating.

The former mill is earmarked for redevelopment as housing.
