A Conservative councillor who served for 11 years on St Edmundsbury Borough Council has died.
Cllr John Hale, who represented the Bardwell ward died last Friday after suffering a stroke. He was 68.
Fellow Cllr Christopher Spicer was a close friend.
He said: “I knew John for 43 years. I was at his wedding and have been an old family friend of his wife.
“He and I have been on the borough together for the last 10 years.
“He was chairman of the performance and audit scrutiny committee, and I his vice chairman.
“For the past six years he was on the treasurery management group.
“He was very popular with his fellow councillors and staff at West Suffolk House and we will miss him.”
Mr Hale was a retired financial services advisor specialising in pensions.
He used that experience in later years to service at the borough council representative on the Suffolk County Council pensions scheme.
Outside of his work, Cllr Hale, who lived in Barningham, was married to Elizabeth and had two children and five grandchildren with whom he enjoyed spending time.
He also collected and enjoyed vintage wines, particularly from France, while he also love going to the opera.
