RAIL passengers experienced delays on Tuesday when a van smashed into a bridge near Stowmarket.
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said a Transit van with a cherry picker on it had ‘smashed’ into the Cow Green crossover bridge in Bacton Road, near Stowmarket, at around 3.20pm.
Trains travelling between Stowmarket and Diss on the Norwich to London main line were brought to a complete standstill while Network Rail engineers examined the bridge.
Passengers of three trains were affected, experiencing delays of around 55 minutes.
Despite ‘significant damage’ to the cherry picker, engineers found no lasting damage to the bridge.
At around 4.30pm a normal train service was resumed.
