Town hosts challenge for church

A FORMER policeman from Bury St Edmunds has devised a cunning plan to help raise funds to restore an old church.

This year, after 32 years, John Saunders retired from the police, in part to spend more time doing volunteer work.

As a parishioner of St Edmund’s Catholic Church, in Westgate Street, he designed Six of the Best, a town trail which will be held on July 17 to help raise £495,000 needed to restore the church, which turns 250-years-old next year, its chapel and crypt.

To complete the trail, teams of four to six adults, accompanied by a maximum of three children aged 11 to 16, will answer questions relating to 35 venues in Bury and the town’s history, while the more adventurous can take up a challenge to undertake 15 other tasks.

Around 40 teams can take part but they must be registered and paid for by July 3. There will be prizes for the winning team and local businesses will provide discounted meals and refreshments, while strawberry teas will be served for £2.50 per head.

The event will cost £5 for adults and £2 for children over 11. Younger children can be taken along. To register or for more details email:
