A BRANDON student with a phobia of bikes is facing his fears by taking part in a 1,000 mile charity ride.

Thomas Betts, from Brandon, is part of the Cambridge Officers Training Corps team that is competing in the Varsity Triple Crown Challenge ride against their opposite numbers at Oxford.

Thomas developed his fear of bikes at 13 but is now back in the saddle in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Thomas said: “My mates at the Officers Training Corps have always joked about it and so volunteering for this tough challenge is completely out of character.

“It’s the first time I’ve ridden a bike for more than a decade and now I’m cycling hundreds of miles each day.”

Thomas is currently in his final year at the University of East Anglia before taking up a place at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
