Theatre treat for town pensioners

PENSIONERS at Parkway House, in Bury St Edmunds, have enjoyed an afternoon out at the theatre, courtesy of a building firm working on the new Wilkinsons Store in Risbygate Street.

Wates, which is working on the new store treated 22 pensioners to lunch, wine and an afternoon at the theatre in Ipswich where they saw Guys and Dolls.

“They’re our neighbours, we have been banging and making noise here for 16 weeks and, as a company, we wanted to give something back to the community,” said construction manager Duncan Clay.

He said the company had several meetings with residents at the home – it was the residents themselves who said they would like to go out to the theatre.

The afternoon out took place earlier this month and Mr Clay said he had since received a card from residents thanking him.

“As the day got closer you could see it was creating a bit of excitement. I think a good time was had by all,” Mr Clay said.

Meanwhile, the construction work on the store is nearing completion – Wates is due to hand over the building to Wilkinsons on Thursday.

The store is then scheduled to open on May 19.
