AN EIGHTEEN-year-old who beat up his mother’s abusive ex-partner has been given a 12-week custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months.
Jamie Blake, of St Edmunds Court in Thetford, was staying in a Thetford hostel when Joe Atherton came in for an interview there.
On Thursday, Bury St Edmunds magistrates heard how Blake hit Mr Atherton with a saucepan before punching and kicking him. Hostel worker Julie Savage was also injured during the December 12 incident.
Blake then stole £1,450 of jewellery from Romark jewellers in Bury. He was restrained outside.
Sally Dale, in mitigation, said Mr Atherton had been violent to Blake’s mother and he had since died but not from the assault.
Miss Dale said Blake, who suffers from mental health issues, stole the jewellery as he thought he would be made homeless.
He admitted theft, assault and threatening behaviour and must pay £50 compensation to Ms Savage and £21 to Tesco in Thetford from where he stole a crate of beer.
