WITH a long summer stretching ahead of her, a 19-year-old student decided to set herself a charity challenge and support her disabled boyfriend.

Alexandra McCourt, from Bury St Edmunds, decided to swim 143 miles – the length of the River Great Ouse – to raise money for a charity which supports her boyfriend, Hugh Anderson.

She raised just under £1,600 for The Arthrogryposis Group (TAG) by completing the gruelling challenge. She swam her last lengths last Friday at Abbeycroft Leisure Centre, in Bury.

“I had four months off from university and it was an interesting challenge. I wanted to see if I could do it.

“And I wanted to raise money for the charity which helps my boyfriend,” said Alexandra.

She had collection boxes dotted around town and also gained sponsorship from Cecil and Larter, Glasswells and Denny Bros.

Hugh, 26, surprised Keele University student, Alexandra, with a party with friends and family to celebrate reaching the end of her swim.
