A Mildenhall man who racially abused a Chinese couple in a supermarket has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Richard Dale, 53, of Chestnut Close, had denied racially aggravated harassment during his trial at Ipswich Crown Court earlier this month but was found guilty by the jury.

The court heard that Dale had made offensive comments to the pair before inviting the man to go outside with him ‘to see what you are made of’.

The incident on April 2 last year was in the Tesco supermarket in Fordham Road, Newmarket.

On Tuesday, Dale returned to court to be sentenced and received four months imprisonment suspended for 18 months.

Judge John Devaux also ordered Dale to pay £250 compensation to the two victims.

During the trial, staff from the store told how the Chinese couple had gone to the customer services desk to raise concerns about Dale’s behaviour. According to customer services manager Janice Mitchell, as he was being asked to leave the store, he said: “I don’t believe you are chucking out an Englishman over a foreigner.”
