A Sudbury garage owner convicted of a string of rapes and sexual assaults committed more than 25 years ago has today (November 27) been jailed.

Trevor Wright, 69, of Ballingdon Street, had denied the offences which were alleged to have involved three schoolgirls but earlier this month was found guilty by a jury at Ipswich Crown Court.

Today Wright, who had admitted while giving evidence that he was “sex obsessed”, was jailed by Judge Martyn Levett for a total of 19 years.

Wright was also told that he must sign on the sexual offences register indefinitely.

Judge Levett told Wright that what he had done had been a breach of trust and that only a substantial prison sentence was appropriate.

Wright had been found guilty of five offences of rape and seven of sexual assault while he had admitted a further six offences of sexual assault involving the same three victims.

The prosecution had alleged that the 12 offences for which Wright was on trial had been committed between 1977 and 1989 and involved three women who, at the time, were schoolgirls.

The jury heard claims that one rape took place in a car belonging to a customer at Wright’s garage in Ballingdon Street.

Other offences were said to have taken place at a stables where Wright kept a horse and one sexual assault in a swimming pool in Devon while Wright was on holiday, said Andrew Thompson, prosecuting.

Giving evidence, Wright said that although he was “sex obsessed” and admitting rubbing himself against the girls for sexual gratification, he denied further assaults or committing rape.

Following his arrest, Wright had told police that he had been a heavy drinker and suffered from memory problems.

Giving evidence via a recorded interview, one of Wright’s alleged victims claimed that he had never used any form of contraception.
