A West Suffolk Hospital patient has been awarded a special medal for successfully managing his diabetes for 60 years.
Stanley Schofield, 90, who lives in Hitcham, was presented with the Robert Lawrence medal by consultant Dr John Clarke at the hospital’s diabetes unit. He is the first to receive the 60-year medal.
Mr Schofield, who has to inject himself with insulin twice a day, said: “I was in the RAF for six years and won two medals. This was quite a surprise - I never realised you could get a medal for being poorly.”
