Sporting couple mark a champion 60 years

ROY and Elsie Wilson have worked together and played sports together and on Wednesday celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

The couple met when they both worked for the same Cheshire council. They married on March 30, 1951 and moved to West Road, Bury St Edmunds, in 1959 when the Air Ministry sent Roy, a civil engineer, to work at RAF Lakenheath. They moved to Great Barton in 1981.

They have a daughter, twin sons and four grandchildren who will join them for a family celebration tomorrow.

Roy played lacrosse for England in the 1948 Olympics and both became involved in local sport. They have cabinet of badminton and tennis trophies and Roy explained how he designed the Risbygate Lawn Tennis and Bowls club’s indoor bowls facility.

In 1999 he became the first recipient of the Bury Free Press Service to Sport Award.
