SINCE the dawn of laptops it is a problem that has confounded us all – how to stop your computer from overheating and switching off.

Now Bury St Edmunds student Claire Haslam-Wise believes she has found the answer with a piece of acrylic the size of a ruler, called The Wedge.

“I used to wedge a book under my laptop to stop it from overheating,” she said.

“I thought ‘I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem – and so I came up with the idea of The Wedge.”

The simple plastic device is manufactured near Bury – while 121 Computers in Diss has become the first shop to sell The Wedge in its store.

Claire, who is studying for a business management and psychology degree at West Suffolk College, said: “I watch Dragon’s Den – it is always the simple ideas that sell. I’ve always been making stuff but this is the one that seems to have taken off. Hopefully, it will pay off my student loan.”
