JOHN Peel’s widow has followed in his footsteps by opening an essential community facility after a £140,000 revamp.

Sheila Ravenscroft followed her husband’s example by opening the Redwood Community Rooms in Stowmarket on Wednesday.

The facility is in the grounds of the Red Gables, which was opened by John in 1997.

David Vince, a volunteer, said the rooms would provide a much-needed community space for the town.

“There’s a kitchen and garden room and it gives community and voluntary groups a place to meet,” he said.

Funding for the refurbishment came through the National Lottery, Mid-Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council, Oddfellows and the Mid-Suffolk Voluntary Organisation Forum.
