Samaritans celebrate 60 years of helping those in need

Samaritans in Bury St Edmunds marked the charity’s 60th birthday today by unveiling a new phone box advert.

The charity have been gifted free advertising space on the side of 20 BT telephone boxes around the country, including one on The Vinefields, Eastgate Street, in Bury.

Today, Bury Branch Director Jenny Vereker was joined by Leader St Edmundsbury Council John Griffiths, Councillor Patrick Chung and branch volunteers in unveiling the kiosk - and eating some ‘Samaritan green’ birthday cake.

Last year, the 107 volunteers at the Samaritans’ Bury branch answered 36,513 calls for help.

Branch Director Jenny Vereker said: “We are really proud that Samaritans has been helping people through difficult times for 60 years, this is a significant milestone for the charity.

“Last year a call to the service was made every six seconds, showing the need for us to continue to be there is greater than ever.”
