Safety fears have forced Mildenhall Parish Council to close the children’s playground opposite the town’s Sainsburys.
The council says following a routine inspection members of its Recreation Management Committee had serious concern about the condition of the ‘wet pour’ safety surface surrounding play apparatus.
A council spokeswoman said: “Large areas had lifted and split which presented a significant trip hazard to children and adults alike.”
At an emergency meeting held yesterday, the parish council agreed unanimously to close the playground until remedial works have been undertaken.
Contractors have been asked for an urgent site visit so the work, on the site which had a £100,000 revamp in 2009, can be done under the terms of the guarantee.
Council chairman John Bloodworth said the decision had been taken reluctantly, knowing how a popular the playground was, but that safety is of prime importance and no risks could be taken.
The nearest play equipment is the multi-user games area on Jubilee Field and other play areas include Comet Way and West Row.
