Bury said a sad farewell to its Early Learning Centre today as the store closed following the amalgamation of the Mothercare and ELC businesses.

The store has rapidly emptied of goods in the last week and manager Vanessa Radford who has worked there 16 years said the staff were ‘gutted’ at the closure.

“We knew about six months ago this would happen and the staff have worked really hard. I am proud of them. I am really sad to say goodby to our customers-some have been coming in for a farewell hug.”

Mark Cordell, chief executive of Ourburystedmunds, said: “It is frustrating as it was such a proftable shop. It was the only Early Learning Centre in a town centre in East Anglia still trading. This is a head office decision and a shame for the staff.”

Mr Cordell said a new tenant was already planning to move into the premises.

The Bury Free Press asked for a comment from the ELC company but had not received one at the time of going to press.
