Damage caused to an ancient monument bridge by a hit-and-run driver has closed Rushford Road between the A1066 and the Rushford Estate.
Accident damage over the Easter weekend has forced the closure of Rushford Bridge, which carries Rushford Road (the C147) over the Little Ouse River between east of Thetford.
Norfolk County Council said: “An unknown vehicle has caused serious damage to a spandrel and parapet walls and the bridge - which is an Ancient Monument - is too narrow to allow temporary vehicle barriers to be used. The road across the bridge is therefore being closed as soon as possible.
The closure is likely to be in place for around four weeks.
The diversion (from the south side of the bridge to the north side) is: From the C147 at the bridge turn right on to Rushford Road. After about 2ml, at the village of Euston turn right (north) on to the A1088 for 2.4ml to the A1066/A1088 roundabout where you turn right on to the A1066. After 2.6ml, turn right off the A1066 on to the C147 Rushford Road, and back to the bridge.
