A RECYCLING guru from Bury St Edmunds has teamed up with a major sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games to launch a national competition.

Karen Cannard, author of The Rubbish Diet blog, is calling for entries for a blogging competition which aims to raise awareness of the importance of reducing waste.

It invites people to write a blogpost about the steps they take to reduce waste at home and can include anything, however small, from stories about composting to the extreme lengths some have taken to save things from landfill.

Karen said: “I am delighted to have such a key involvement in this exciting competition.

“London 2012 is the first Olympic Games to highlight the significance of sustainability and the importance of treating rubbish as a vital resource.

“This is something we are very good at in Suffolk so I would love our county’s bloggers to show off their waste reduction talents and share their stories with the nation.”

Having run a number of local and national grassroots campaigns since she took her very first waste-reduction challenge in 2008, Karen was approached by Coca-Cola, which has been supporting the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to achieve its waste reduction goals, to help launch the competition.

A prize package featuring Olympic tickets, travel and accommodation is being offered, with Karen to judge the entries and select the winner.

Karen said: “Almost everyone in the county recycles and reduces waste in one way or other and everyone has a tale to tell.”

The deadline for entries is midnight today.
