THE historic Abbey Gate, in Bury St Edmunds, was coloured red on Tuesday as a national campaign was launched to encourage people to look after their hearts.

The Abbey Gate is one of a number of iconic landmarks which turned red across the country to launch Red for Heart fund-raising for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

St Edmundbsury Mayor Cllr Christopher Spicer launched the switch on, along with local heart patients, BHF volunteers, members of the Upbeat Heart Support Group and staff from West Suffolk Hospital.

Heart disease is still the biggest killer in the UK and people are being invited to put on heart themed fund-raising events this month and wear red on Friday, February 24.
