PUPILS from Howard Middle School were returning a favour when they visited the Howard Over 60s’ Club.
Club chairman and founder Ernie Broom has helped to teach country dancing at the school for the past three or four years, so when the 18 pupils danced at the club in Newbury Community Centre, they were showing off the skills he had taught them.
Ernie said: “We’ve always tried to work in with the community and we liaise with the schools.”
It all started when the club responded to a request from the school for members to go along and teach skills to the pupils. So while club members taught things like needlework and calligraphy, Ernie was nominated ‘dance teacher’.
“I still teach there once a week but they’ve got a teacher now who’s enthusiastic about dance and knows far more than me,” he said.
“They got the Over 60s’ Club up and dancing. I know the older people want to do this again and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it.”
