Years of fund-raising culminated in a ‘very proud’ moment for all on Thursday when a new play park opened in Thetford.
Residents of the Redcastle estate joined youngsters and councillors to celebrate the official opening of the park in St John’s Way.
“It feels amazing to finally have it,” said Donna Warnock, a member of the Redcastle Action Group (RAG) which was instrumental in getting the project off the ground.
Started by the late Shirley Hurr and Pat Dixey, whose contributions are recognised through plaques at the park, the RAGs raised £6,000 towards the cost of new equipment.
Thetford Town Council invested a further £20,920 and Breckland Council gave a £13,080 grant.
“I’m sure it’ll prove to be really popular with local youngsters for years to come,” said Cllr Gordon Bambridge, Breckland’s executive member for growth who is encouraging other councils, community groups, sports clubs, charities and schools to make bids for the Breckland Outdoor Sport and Play Fund before the March 1 deadline, with £114,000 of the £195,000 allocated still available.
