A derelict petrol station may be turned into a vehicle workshop and used car sales site.

Southgate Green Filling Station in Sicklesmere Road, Bury St Edmunds, has been closed since 2011 but Warne Motors, of Bunting Road, Bury, has applied for planning permission for change of use and to extend the existing vehicle workshop so it can relocate to the site.

The application says site appearance will be improved by the removal of the filling station canopy and a general tiding up of the forecourt.

Warne Motors plans to use the site to provide ‘servicing, repair and MoT testing of cars and light commercial vehicles’ but says no bodywork repairs or paint spraying will be done there.

There will also be no fuel sales so the pumps and tanks will be removed following the completion of decontamination begun by the previous owners in 2008.

A report attached to the application says boreholes revealed fuel contamination of ground water on the site and 10,000 litres of fuel was pumped out in 2011-12.

The ground water will continue to be monitored.
