This week’s picture shows the 1975 football team from the British Beef Company abattoir which was in Hollow Rd, Bury St Edmunds.
Bob Cockle, Bury Town Council Mayor, is pictured right and on the left is Bill Frost. Both were linesmen for the team made up of slaughtermen and gutmen from the abattoir.
Bob, who worked there as a driver, said: “I had three years working there and it was the best job I ever had. Michael Partridge was a superb manager.”
Bob and Rolph Smith, who ran a cafe in St Andrew’s Street North, setup the football team and their first match on Hardwick Heath drew four four.
However, shortly afterwards, Bob had his knuckles rapped for not informing the local FA about the team and the match.
Bob left the British Beef Company in 1976 and some years later was called in in his position as USDAW union rep to sadly discuss redundancy terms as the business subsequently closed.
