Barton Mills villagers are hoping to turn their phone box into a life saver by installing a portable defibrillator there.

While most villages have installed them outside shops or in village halls, Barton Mills Parish Council heard of one being put into a phone box and thought the box outside The Bell pub would be a good central location for one.

Pamela Boura, chair of the parish council, which had refused BT’s offer to sell the box for £1, said: “The Community Heartbeat Trust will do all the necessary arrangements with BT.”

The parish has started the fund with £500, but events are planned to raise the rest of the £2,000 needed by the end of the year. Once installed the trust will hold village training events, though the defib is designed to be used by untrained people because it gives step-by-step instructions.
