A PETITION signed by more than 100 Bury St Edmunds residents and businesses calls for a policy that offers them some protection from drunken yobs to be reinstated.
A Special Area Licensing Policy meant pubs and clubs applying for a new licence or extended hours in the town centre had to show how it would prevent its customers from adding to a problem of late night anti-social behaviour in the town.
The policy was in place for two years but was dropped by St Edmundsbury Borough Council earlier this year – with some suggesting it was to pave the way for the Wetherspoons application at the Corn Exchange.
Now a meeting of the full council on Tuesday night is being recommended by its cabinet – the leader and portfolio holders at the council – to reinstate the policy.
The Churchgate Area Association will present its petition backing the call for the policy reinstatement.
