Being the new landlord in a village pub usually means winning over the locals, but for Peter Shaves it was like coming back home.

Peter and his wife Christine have taken over the Three Horseshoes in Barrow, but it is Peter’s second stint as landlord there and Christine was brought up in the village.

In addition, today they open the pub’s restaurant under chef Warren Beckham, who was brought up in nearby Gazeley.

He has returned home, with his Jordanian fiancee, from running the busy kitchen of a restaurant in Geneva.

Peter began his pub career as Greene King’s youngest tenant at 23 in The Plough and Fleece, Cockfield, in 1985.

He last ran the Three Horseshoes between October 1989 and January 2000 before moving to The Bushel in Bury St Edmunds.

Peter said: “It’s like coming back home again.

“My grandson and daughter live in the village and my wife comes from Barrow so my mother-in-law and sister-in-law are here.

“Most of the regulars were regulars when I was here before. I’ve played golf with the lads for years and carried on when I was at The Bushel.

“I’ve never really left because I was always coming over to Barrow.

“When you know the people, taking over a pub is a lot easier because you haven’t got to start from scratch.

He said they have spent about £4,000 refurbishing the pub.

Christine said: “We’ll be concentrating on serving a good selection of quality real ales.

“There will always be three guest beers.”

The Shaves will have an official launch evening for the restaurant next Wednesday with a free dessert and glass of wine or a small beer for all pre-booked and pre-ordered tables. But they stress the need to book early, on 01284 810113, because numbers will be limited.

The restaurant will be open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Friday and Saturday lunchtimes and evenings and for Sunday lunches.
