Party in Park marks Scouting centenary

THERE was a birthday spirit in the Abbey Gardens, Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday as the area’s Scouting movement staged another event to mark its centenary.

The Party in the Park took the form of fairground-style and other games and a tea and cakes finale to add to the enjoyment.

Alan Chilestone, assistant district commissioner for Cubs and group Scout leader at Mildenhall, said: “The children certainly enjoyed themselves.”

He estimated between 300-350 attended. Special guest at Saturday’s birthday event was Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Christopher Spicer.

He was invited to help cut a cake specially made by one of the Mildenhall Beaver leaders.

He was joined for a photo call by members of 1st Horringer Beavers and Mildenhall Cubs.

The cake was decorated with a special centenary badge, as well as the logos of the different sections of Scouting.

A centenary camp was held at Bradfield Park in July.
