COUNCILLORS are aiming to use land at Kempson Way, Moreton Hall, for temporary park and ride facilities to cope with this year’s expected Christmas rush on parking.
Last year the successful Christmas Fayre and the run up to Christmas saw town car parks full and this year the town will lose the 100 spaces that had previously been avaiable for weekend parking at Shire Hall.
A report to the Bury St Edmunds area working party on Tuesday outlined 370 possible places for park and ride on employment land on Moreton Hall.
The site, owned by St Edmundsbury, has been for sale for several years and although there is early interest from two organisations officers have suggested that a third of the site could be used for park and ride.
Negotiations to use a site at Rougham Airfield had stalled said the report.
The cost of improving the area at Kempson Way would amount to £50,000 which would be met from the county on street parking account. Work would be due to start in September in order to provide parking in time for the Christmas Fayre.
