Two former colleagues, who have faced turbulent careers, are taking charge of their own destiny by opening a new vehicle bodyshop.

Chris Smith and business partner Stephen Smith have launched Bury Body Repair, in Cratfield Road, offering everything from wheel refurbs to full resprays.

The pair, who used to work together at the Lookers Land Rover and Jaguar bodyshop, have both been laid off ‘about three or four times’ following closures and the recession.

Chris Smith, 32, said: “We just thought we would try to set up our own and at least that way destiny’s in our own hands.”

With several relatives and friends working for West Suffolk Hospital, they are running a 10 per cent discount on labour charges for NHS staff.

Between them the pair have about 35 years worth of experience.

Chris added: “I’m excited and think we can make a real good go of it. We just want to make a living without worrying about our jobs.

“We will be 20 per cent cheaper than other people at the moment because we’re not currently VAT registered.”
