New faces boost West Suffolk Motor Club

When I look back over the 2015 season and forward to 2016, I feel happy with the way the local motorsport scene shaped up.

Of course, not everything went exactly as planned, it never does, but generally it is good tidings I bring at this time of year.

There is no doubt that, for West Suffolk Motor Club, the past 12 months have been good. The club has seen a lot of new members, with some of the younger ones involved in the organisational side of the sport - vital if the future of any organisation is to be safe.

A lot of those new faces have become involved in competition, some with considerable success. The formation of the Anglia Motor Sport Club has been a good thing - a way that local clubs can work together and help with the promotion of individual meetings.

At present, it is the trial, autosolo and Targa rallies that are catered for in the AMSC, but surely there is no reason why traditional rallies could not be brought in? Looking at the three currently running, West Suffolk MC have not only been active as organisers, but more often than not, the local club has provided a high proportion of competitors.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise to see that those three competitions have all seen the overall winners come from WSMC.

The Targa Rally Challenge saw no less than 143 drivers score points over the six rounds, and at the end, only two points separated Andrew Scott’s MX5 from the Renault Clio of fellow club member, Marcus Keeble.

In the Autosolo Challenge, again they were the top two. Here, Scott took victory, this time just five points separated them.

The autotest category went to John Petersen, who brought his Mini from Sporting CC of Norfolk.

The car trial scene was perhaps the one where WSMC provided the highest percentage of entries. The Challenge was a close run series, but again it was a WSMC driver at the top of the points chart, with Christopher Pettitt in his Citroen Saxo.

The local motor racing scene is somewhat different, as our local drivers compete in events organised by national organising clubs. Gone are the days when clubs such as West Essex and Peterborough MC organised such events.

For Troston’s John Cutmore, the 750 MC’s RGB Championship again saw him in the Spire GT3. He was one of the favourites for top honours, but the team had reckoned without the speed of Scott Mittell in his Mittell MC-52B. Throughout the season, these two fought it out, and it went down to the wire. Eventually, with the Mittell seeming to have better straight-line performance, Cutmore had to settle for the runners-up spot.

The Spire team took in the Birkett Six-Hour Rally, staged at Silverstone, and obtained some compensation when they took overall victory in the scratch result, although some way down on handicap.

It was the endurance racing that saw Chedburgh’s Stephen Pearson on the top of the podium at Snetterton. These were probably the best results of the year, as he was in a winning team on two occasions. He also had race victories in the Toyo Tyres Racing Saloon Series with his BMW E36, a car he plans to race again in 2016.

For Stephen Glasswell, racing with the Historic Sports CC was probably the best move the Great Barton driver could have made. Glasswell really enjoyed his racing in Historic Formula Ford 2000, driving the Reynard. His highlight was surely a podium position, as he took a third at Spa in Belgium, but back in the UK, he was awarded driver of the day on two occasions.

Cockfield-based Kiwi, Ian Jones, was dominant in the HSCC Classic Racing Car Championship, and took his Lotus 59 to a third title, with the season little more than half completed.

Tony Davis and Peter Chappell continued to get good class results, driving Austin Healey Sprites in the Historic Road Sports Championship. Chappell intends to continue with his Sprite in 2016, but Davis is busy preparing an MGB.
