election threw up a remarkable result

David Dawson , Hospital Road , Bury St Edmunds

Much has been written about the reasons for the low turnout in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, both nationally and locally, and the success of Independent candidates. Here in Suffolk, we had a remarkable result in that on first preference votes, Jane Basham, the Labour candidate polled more than Tim Passmore, the Conservative and eventual winner. Jane was an excellent and impressive candidate who set out her policy priorities and was able to demonstrate that she had the personal qualities and professional experience to do the job.Clearly on such a platform, she appealed to people of all parties and none (i.e. a virtual coalition).

Is it too much to ask that the large minority of non-Conservative voters will be as well-represented in future Suffolk elections?
