Chris Ingham previews the best jazz gigs around the eastern region this week (August 28 - September 4).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 30 - NIGEL PORTASS TRIO (The Fox, Bury, 7.15pm, free) Keyboardist Portass leads a Sinatra-style swing evening with singer Tom Melvin and drummer Bob Dore.

ADAM GLASSER (The Cock Inn, Clare, 8pm, £10. Details www.jazz-nights.com) Brilliant jazz harmonica virtuoso leads the Jazznights Trio on a set of bebop and standards.

ANDY BOWIE QUARTET (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

MONDAY, AUGUST 31 - JAZZ JAM (The Fat Cat Brewery Tap, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey. All instrumentalists and singers welcome for sitting in.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 - PETER KING (Lakeside Country Club, Lyng, 8pm, £12. Details: www.lakeside-jazz.com) Indestructible alto saxophonist is now a bona fide British jazz legend. Tonight he purveys his incendiary bop-and-beyond with Simon Brown (bass), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums).

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 - SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 - JOANNA EDEN: JONI & ME (Hunter Club, Bury, 8pm, £12. Details: www.headhunterslive.org/07799 650009) The jazz-inflected Joni Mitchell songbook is examined by the honey-toned singer-songwriter and vocalist in Jazz at the Movies with Chris Ingham (piano/guitar) and Lewis Andrews (bass/guitar).

MORNINGTON LOCKETT: RONNIE REMEMBERED (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £16. Details: www.dovbear.co.uk/fleece) Ronnie Scott’s old sparring partner on the tenor saxophone salutes his ex-employer in the company of former Scott sidemen John Critchinson (piano) and Dick Pearce (trumpet) with Tim Wells (bass) and Trevor Tomkins (drums).
