Tonight will see businesses and their employees honoured at the third Bury Free Press Business Awards.
What makes the evening a real success is the sense of unity; business leaders, council chiefs and employees all celebrating the year’s successes enjoyed in this part of West Suffolk.
We’ve had a tough ride in the past seven years. When one commentator said he expected the recession to last for a good five years back in 2007, I did a double-take. Could we possibly endure that amount of time in the grip of uncertainty, job losses and cutbacks?
But here we are in late 2014, and only now is the Bank of England considering raising interest rates.
So, yes, the past seven years have been tough and there will be further tough decisions that need taking before we finally see those green shoots. But businesses here which have ridden out the worst of the storm and made themselves fitter for purpose as a result should take their foot off the gas for one night, sit back and applaud the efforts of tonight’s winners – and give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done, too.
