A COMMUNITY woodland area in Elmswell now has 1,683 trees – one for every household in the village.

Eighty children from Elmswell Primary School joined with the Elmswild group to plant the final tree on Tuesday.

Lukeswood, the village’s community wild space, pledged to plant the new trees as part of the People’s Millions grant it received in 2009.

Elmswild is now looking to buy a further 2.5 acres of land with the hopes of creating a community orchard and a green burial area.

Mary Feeney, from the group, said: “It has taken us a long time to get here but it has always been our goal to have a space that belongs to the village forever – a wild space for people to enjoy.”
