This week’s photograph was sent it by Paul Hopfensperger after an amusing conversation about beavers left him feeling nostalgic.
He was a member of the Bury Beavers Swimming Club, pictured here before leaving for a three-day visit to Kevelaer, in Germany, in April 1982.
It was the club’s first international away match and ‘The Beavers’ won 10 of 16 relays.
Mr Hopfensperger’s win in the open freestyle 100 metre became quite a talking point.
A Bury Free Press report said: “His time of 58.5, while not quite his best, was hailed as possibly the fastest swim in the area.”
Referring to the Falklands Conflict, Mr Hopfensperger - pictured second from the right in the front row, behind the banner - said: “We left on Friday and by Saturday morning we were at war with Argentina! Couldn’t believe it at the time!”
You can email your old pictures to email@example.com or send them to Laura Smith at the Bury Free Press in King’s Road. Please include a few details and a contact phone number.
