A RESTAURATEUR has united the Chinese and Bury St Edmunds communities by fund-raising for a local cause during an important event in the Chinese calendar.

During recent celebrations of the Chinese New Year at the Canton Chinese Restaurant, in Hatter Street, owner Patrick Chung sold raffle tickets to raise funds for Howard Primary School, where he is a school governor.

More than 50 prizes were won, including a holiday, weekend break, Ipod and digital TV.

A total of £1,170 was raised, which will be used to enhance the school’s outdoor learning environment.

Headteacher Bernedette Higgins said: “It’s impressive – we’re extremely grateful to Patrick and everybody who helped out.”

“I think in this economic climate, it’s marvellous,” said Mr Chung. “All the schools are supported by the councils but I think a little extra will be helpful to them.”
