A school in special measures for more than a year has appointed a new leadership team to boost improvement– as it presses ahead with plans to join the Bury St Edmunds Academy Trust.
Alison Earl, head at the ‘outstanding’ rated Barrow Primary, will work as executive headteacher at Tollgate Primary alongside existing head David Hicks and drive a plan to ‘bring about rapid improvement’.
Meanwhile, Barrow’s deputy head Helen Ashe and senior teacher Lucy Smith will serve as deputy head and assistant head at Tollgate respectively.
A statement from the trust said: “The local authority has agreed to this course of action and we are delighted that it will be achieved with the existing governing body. The Department for Education (DfE) has stated that Tollgate should open as an academy within the all-through trust on July 1 and work has started to effect the transition smoothly and quickly for the benefit of all the pupils.”
Suffolk County Council applied to the DfE to install an interim executive body to replace the school’s existing governors. However, the move has stalled after the DfE challenged the authority on a ‘technicality’ within the application.
A council spokesman said: “We have withdrawn our application and will resubmit.”
