AFTER two months of building work the new and improved entrance to St Edmundsbury Cathedral will open today.
The newly designed entrance on Angel Hill will give easy disabled access to the building for the first time.
The cathedral’s PR manager Sarah Friswell said: “Bury St Edmunds was much lower 500 years ago when the cathedral was built and steps had been needed to allow people to enter it from the 21st century street level.
“It has taken 10 years to get approval for the work.
“I cant tell you how delighted we are to open the new access.”
Previously visitors to the cathedral had to negotiate two steps to enter the building.
The newly designed entrance will provide a permanent solution to the cathedral’s access problem.
