An animal-mad nine-year-old from Euston has won a national writing prize run by the RSPCA.

Talented Martha Mooney entered Animal Action magazine’s WriteOn! competition in February with a poem about a hedgehog.

Martha, who wants to be a vet when she is older, said it was a big surprise when she found out she had won.

“I was really excited, she said.

“The poem is about whenmy mum was calling in the cat and there was a hedgehog.

“I like writing about animals. I want to be a vet when I grow up.”

Martha’s mum Andrea said: “She found out she had won when her face showed up in her favourite animal magazine.

“She had no idea until then that she had won.”

Martha won a Dell tablet, some signed books and a tour of the RSPCA centre in East Winch.
