A man who made threats to kill when he turned up at the home of his ex-girlfriend in Bury St Edmunds has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Reuben Bennett, 26, hoped for a reconciliation but found another man in bed at the property on February 17, prosecutor Robert Sadd told Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday.

After picking up a kitchen knife Bennett repeatedly made threats against the naked man who tried to shield himself behind a duvet.

His former girlfriend tried to intervene before running outside to scream for help. Bennett, of Ipswich Street, fled in her car. Mr Sadd said the prosecution accepted that he had not intended anyone any harm.

Phillipa Eastwood, in mitigation, said the incident with the knife had not been premeditated.

Bennett had already spent two and a half months in custody awaiting the hearing.

He admitted making threats to kill, taking a motor vehicle without the consent of the owner and driving with no insurance. He was jailed for two years suspended for two years, told to remain under Probation Service supervision for a year and participate in an anger management programme.
