A MAN who harassed his neighbour with racially aggravated insults has been given a 12-month restraining order and fined.
Clive Headley, 46, of Bildeston Road, Little Finborough, pleaded guilty to racial harrassment at Bury Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecuting, Colette Griffiths said that Headley’s neighbour had been in bed when, on July 18, he heard his garden gate rattling and turned on his home CCTV to find Headley, with whom he had had previous disputes, shouting and swearing.
He spoke to him from behind his front door and was twice sworn at in a racial manner, said Mrs Griffiths.
In mitigation, Declan Gallagher said Headley was ‘not remotely racist in nature’ and pointed out his best friend, ‘of African Caribbean descent’, in the public gallery. His client had ‘wound himself up’ over the dispute involving meadowland after having drunk a ‘few beers’.
Headley was fined £300 for harassment, £100 for its racial nature and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also given a 12 month restraining order.
