MARY Bird has not known where her son and his mates were since early January, but last week it was all over the news.

Her son, Luke Netto, is an able seaman class two on HMS Cumberland which started bringing people out of Libya’s second city Benghazi on Friday.

Mary, from Ixworth, said: “He joined HMS Cumberland on January 4 and they have been in the Gulf, but because that’s a war zone we haven’t known exactly where.”

Luke, 22, was studying art at West Suffolk College when he decided to make use of his passion for cookery. Mary said: “It would have taken three years to train as a chef there, so he cut his hair and joined the Navy and got his qualification in six months at HMS Raleigh.”

Luke, who has a joint role as a chef and medic, was a drummer with several local bands before he went to sea.
