Work has officially started on the new care home at Cedars Park, Stowmarket.

Care UK and developers Castleoak were joined by pupils from the neighbouring Cedars Park Primary School and County Councillor Alan Murray to mark the start of the work on the £4.5million state of the art facility which will provide a 70 bed care home being and well being centre.

This is being built on land in Creeting Road East close to the pond and primary school.

The facility will provide 24 hour nursing care, specialist dementia services, a small cinema, hairdressing salon and café and shop. The well being centre will open seven days a week providing day clubs and specialist care, therapy sessions and activities which will be available to people living in the community.

Residents at Wade House in Stowmarket, which is scheduled to close, are being consulted about their choices which include the opportunity to move into the new home when it opens in the spring of 2015.

Cllr Murray, who is Suffolk County Council cabinet member of health and adult services, said: “Cedars Park is the eighth new care home and well being centre to get underway as part of our agreement with Care UK. In 2012 we made a commitment to ensure Suffolk people were able to access care in high quality, purpose-built facilities. This is exactly what is happening.”

Care UK is investing £60million in 10 new care homes and well being centres in the county.

Cedars Park is being built on three floors in a curved design which will reflect the pond and will have gardens and sitting out areas. There will be a new access road and drop off spaces for parents at the rear of the school as well as visitor parking for the new building.

Mildenhall Lodge in Mildenhall and Davers Court in Bury St Edmunds will open this summer
