A West Suffolk Hospital patient has received an award for successfully managing his type one diabetes for 60 years.

Andrew Donovan, of Wetherden, was presented with the Robert Lawrence medal by Dr John Clark, consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at the hospital.

The accolade is named after the co-founder of the Diabetic Association, now known as Diabetes UK, which issues the award to people who have lived with type one diabetes.

Dr Clark said: “We’re delighted to be able to present Andrew with this medal.

“He has set a great example to our other patients by showing them that if they work at it, then can successfully manage their condition and continue to enjoy their normal day-to-day life.”
