A man claiming to be a meter reader who called at a house in Brandon on Monday has been discovered to be genuine.

At around 3pm police received a report from a resident about a man they believed to be suspicious, who was seen to look at the electricity meter of a house in Rowan Drive.

Residents called their supplier and were told there were no readings scheduled to take place in the area at that time, fostering their belief the man was not legitimate.

Subsequent police enquiries revealed the man was in fact a genuine meter reader working for another agency on behalf of the energy provider.

Officers would still encourage residents to be vigilant and contact police if they believe someone to be suspicious. Genuine callers will not be offended to be asked for identification.
