Tours of a historic church on the Ickworth estate are offering a rare glimpse of vault where some of the most influential figures in British history are buried.

The vault at St Mary’s Church contains more than 20 members of the Hervey family and the last to be buried there were Victor, the 6th Marquess, who was moved from his original burial site in Monaco, and the seventh Marquess Nicholas.

John Porter, church co-ordinator, said: “There’s 500 years of family buried in that vault - it’s very much a family church and people are interested in knowing what happened. There’s no electricity so we have to set up a battery powered light. People love it - some people have a built-in curiosity.”

The next tour of the church, which was rededicated last June after being closed for nearly 30 years, including the vault is on August 9. Next Saturday there will be the first wedding blessing at the church since it reopen-ed.
