The torrential downpours across the Bury St Edmunds area yesterday saw 21mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
It is already more than at the same time last year when there was no rain in the first three weeks of the month until 15mm fell on July 22.
Bury St Edmunds weather recorder Alan Messem said: “It was very torrential rain until about 6am this morning and suddenly it stopped. It certainly poured over night.”
The downpour flooded part of Newmarket Road and the weather was strong enough to take down a huge branch from a cedar tree in Horringer as shown in the above picture.
