A student from Bury St Edmunds has been named this year’s West Suffolk Young Musician.

Katy Rochford, 16, won the level three competition and the overall title at this year’s finalists’ concert at The Apex, in Bury, on Monday.

The Thurston Upper School pupil performed Charlie Parker’s Now’s the Time and Maputo by Marcus Miller on alto saxophone, accompanied on guitar by former winner Harry Greene.

Katy, who also plays piano and viola, passed her grade eight saxophone with 98 per cent and, as an Aldeburgh Young Musician, has performed on stage with Bellowhead.

The competition’s level two winner was French horn player Claudia Walker, 15, a St Benedict’s Upper School pupil, who is a member of both the West Suffolk Youth Orchestra and Suffolk Youth Orchestra.

Neil Carlson, chairman of the organising committee, said, “The audience was dazzled by the sheer talent of the young finalists.”

All 14 finalists went away with a £25 voucher donated by Music Sales Group, while Katy and Claudia each received trophies.

The top prize of £100 Balaam’s Music vouchers, donated by John Balaam, was presented to Katy by chairman of the adjudicating panel, Harriet Bennett.

Claudia was awarded £50 Balaam’s Music vouchers, donated by the Bury branch of the Decorative and Fine Arts Society, and presented to her by treasurer Bob Emery.
